Academic Misconduct
Review the academic misconduct policy here.
Major Status
Students who have a cumulative University of Utah GPA of 2.50 or higher, and have earned a grade of C or higher in at least three of the following courses: MATH 1210/1310, MATH 1220/1320, CHEM 1210, and PHYS 2210, are eligible to apply for Major Status. The application can be found here.
Course Grade Requirements
For students declared in catalog years 2024-2025 and beyond, the Department requires a grade of C or higher in all courses counted towards the major (excludes General Education requirements).
For students declared in catalog years 2023-2024 and earlier, the Department requires the following grades:
A grade of “C” or higher must be met for the following courses:
- All Mathematics (MATH 1210/1310, 1220/1320, 2210, 2250)
- All Chemistry (CHEM 1210, 1215, 1220, 1225)
- All Physics (PHYS 2210, 2215, 2220, 2225)
- CVEEN 2010, 2140, 2310, and 2320
For all other CVEEN and major related courses, a grade of “C-“ or higher is required.
GPA
For students declared in catalog years 2024-2025 and beyond, the Department requires all students to maintain a cumulative University of Utah GPA of 2.50 or higher. Any student whose cumulative GPA falls below the minimum requirement will undergo status changes as outlined in our Academic Standings.
The last grade received is used to calculate the GPA and grades from previous attempts of the same course are not included in the GPA.
For students declared in catalog years 2023-2024 and earlier, the University requires all students to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher. The Department requires all students to maintain an engineering GPA (EGPA) of 2.50 or higher. Engineering GPA is defined as courses counted towards the major with the exception of the following:
- All general education courses
- CVEEN 1000 & 2000
Repeat Policy
If a student takes a CVEEN course and fails to achieve the minimum required grade, they may retake the course for a grade only once more to fulfill degree requirements. However, if one withdrawal occurs within the first two attempts, it will not be considered under the repeat policy.
If at the end of the spring semester you have attempted a CVEEN course more than 2 times and have not successfully passed, you will be placed on academic probation. See Academic Standings.
Academic Standings
Good Standing
Students declared in catalog years 2024-2025 and beyond are required to maintain a cumulative University of Utah GPA of 2.50 or higher to remain in good standing. If the cumulative GPA falls below 2.50, the student will undergo the following status changes.
Students declared in catalog years 2023-2024 and earlier are required to maintain a minimum cumulative University of Utah GPA of 2.00 and an Engineering GPA of 2.50. If either the cumulative GPA or Engineering falls below the minimums, the student will undergo the following status changes.
Academic Probation
After Spring grades are posted, the Department will review the academic standings of all students. If a student fails to maintain the GPA requirements for their catalog year or is in violation of the repeat policy, they will be removed from major status and be placed on academic probation. Students will be notified of their change in academic status via their university email. Students on academic probation will not be allowed to take any CVEEN classes without first meeting with an academic advisor and creating an Academic Success Plan for the following academic year. Should a student be placed on probation while already registered for classes in the upcoming semester, those classes may be dropped.
While on probation, a student must make progress towards completing their Academic Success Plan and meet with an academic advisor before registering for the following semester. If the plan’s goals are being met, the academic advisor will provide access to the CVEEN classes as outlined in the plan. If at any time the plan’s goals are not being met, the student’s case will be referred to the CVEEN Undergraduate Committee for review. The CVEEN Undergraduate Committee will then decide if the student will be allowed to continue on probation or be suspended from the program.
A student can return to good standing once they have successfully completed their Academic Success Plan and their GPA determined by their catalog year is at 2.50 or higher.
Academic Suspension
If no progress is made towards completing the Academic Success Plan or if a student fails to meet with an academic advisor as required while on probation, the student will be suspended from the program. Academic Suspension will be for a minimum of three consecutive semesters. While on suspension the student’s status will be changed to pre-major status and will not be allowed to take any CVEEN major classes.
If, after completing their suspension period, the student wishes to return to the program, they must meet with an academic advisor by the deadlines listed below and file a petition to the CVEEN Undergraduate Committee. The petition must include a personal statement and a proposed Academic Success Plan. The Undergraduate Committee will review the case and decide the conditions on which the student will be allowed to return. If readmission is granted, the student will return on academic probation.
Desired return semester | Deadline to meet with an advisor |
---|---|
Fall | March 31 |
Spring | September 30 |
Summer | February 28 |
Academic Dismissal
After returning from suspension, if no progress is made during the return semester, the student will be subject to dismissal from the Department by the Undergraduate Committee. A student who has been dismissed from the Department can only appeal for readmittance if they are eligible for academic renewal.
Academic Success Plan
Students placed on academic probation must make an appointment with an academic advisor. Before the appointment, they must complete the Pre-Meeting Form to identify appropriate resources for success. During the advising appointment, the student will work with the advisor to develop the Academic Success Plan. The plan will consist of:
- A realistic course schedule for the next academic year (2 to 3 semesters)
- An individualized list of campus resources to help improve academic performance
Once the plan has been agreed upon by the student, it will become part of their official record and will be used to determine if progress is being made. The student will only be allowed to take the classes outlined in the Academic Success Plan. Failure to follow the plan and meet with an advisor once a semester may result in academic suspension.
Intro to Engineering
CVEEN 1000 (Introduction to Civil & Environmental Engineering) may be waived if the student meets one of the following requirements:
- The student has an introductory course from another Engineering Department
- The student is eligible for and receives major status at the time of transfer
- The student has an Associate’s Degree in Engineering
GRADUATE LEVEL COURSES
Students with a cumulative University of Utah GPA of 3.20 or higher, especially those contemplating graduate studies, are highly encouraged to incorporate 6000 level courses into their technical electives. To do so, students must complete the Request to Enroll in Graduate Courses as an Undergraduate form and obtain approval from the course instructor. For students pursuing further education at the graduate level, a maximum of six (6) credit hours taken as an undergraduate can be applied toward their graduate degree, provided these courses are not being utilized for their undergraduate degree.
